I deleted about 1400 pictures and videos …

Permanently deleting photos My iPhone storage was nearing its 64 GB capacity, with about 25 GB taken up by photos, so I disabled iCloud photo syncing and deleted *all* photos and videos stored on my iPhone. I then permanently deleted all "recently deleted" items, checked everywhere else I thought any photos or videos might be hiding and eventually deleted everything I could find on my device that's not an app. I restarted the device, updated to the newest iOS version and restarted again, and did all the other things they tell you to do to ensure that the photos and videos are actually gone from the device. And yet, the phone tells me I have almost exactly the same amount of storage available, and photos are still taking up 22.43 GB of space. The photo app has 22.43 GB listed under "documents and data." I can't find any way of emptying any kind of cache associated with the app. Of course, Apple won't let me delete the photo app itself, so I can't do it that way. I have waited 24 hours now to see if the phone will automatically clean up whatever garbage related to photos is *still* on the phone for some nonsensical reason, and nothing has happened. I've done everything one could reasonably be expected to do to get rid of my photos and videos. I'm at my wit's end. All the trouble I went through to get rid of 25 GB of material on my phone has done virtually nothing to alleviate the storage problem, and to add insult to injury, my phone is still bothering me with the warning that my storage is almost full, and that I should sync photos with iCloud to save space, even though I know that would do exactly the opposite at this point! I've seen this same issue posted on the forums here a dozen times and not one of the responses is helpful. I can't stand how many times "community experts" copy and paste how-tos straight from Apple that completely miss the point. Before replying please confirm that what you're sharing is (1) relevant and (2) not something I've just said I already tried. I'm not an idiot. If I could have easily found the answer in any other way I would not be posting here. I must add, I was on board with iCloud early on and didn't mind having less storage on my device in exchange for buying more storage on iCloud and keeping a minimal amount of content on the device itself, but I am extremely frustrated that Apple has made it so difficult to operate this way. I've had the "optimize photos" feature toggled on since it came out, figuring that would drastically cut down on space taken up by photos and videos, but it definitely has not. Even with that option selected, photos and videos were (and are) still allowed to take up 25 GB of space on the device. How is that optimized? I don't want 25 GB stored on my phone. That's the whole reason I chose to sync with icloud and "optimize" photo storage.

How to delete “recently accessed files downloaded to my device” but KEEP them in iCloud?!?!?! I’ve run out of storage I’ve run out of storage on my iPhone 12 Pro Max AGAIN. I’m trying to clear up some space in my phone, so I’m going through my photos/videos and saving the large files (up to ~14Gb) to iCloud so that I can delete them from my device. I then go to the iPhone Storage in Settings, go to Photos, and Empty my Recently Deleted. I feel like it used to work, but now, as I save the videos to files, delete the videos, and clear my recently deleted ones, it seems that the storage is just switching from Photos to iCloud!!!! iCloud wasn’t even anywhere I remember seeing in my iPhone Storage app list, as it lists the apps that take up the most space first. Now, my Photos app has gone down to Photos—388.99Gb (from just over 411Gb), but iCloud is now, iCloud—20.35Gb!!!! WTF?!?! What good does that do me?! When I click on iCloud in the iPhone Storage in Settings, it says this, “Your most recently accessed files are downloaded to this device for quick access. The original files remain safely stored in iCloud.” I’ve looked everywhere I can think of, but I can’t seem to find a way to delete the automatic (and sooo unappreciated) downloaded iCloud files from my DEVICE – as I was freaking trying to do by saving them to iCloud and deleting the videos from the Photos app – and still KEEP them IN iCloud!! I NEED TO FIND A WAY TO DO THIS QUICK, OR I AM IN DANGER OF LOSING A THIRD APPLE DEVICE TO NOT ENOUGH STORAGE/MEMORY TO BE ABLE TO TURN BACK ON!!! That first happened with my iPhone XS Max, which is still sitting in my room unable to turn on. ALL OF MY PHOTOS AND VIDEOS (including ALL of them from my first—and second—Panic! at The Disco concerts) TOTALING WELL OVER 300Gbs, WERE SAVED TO THE DEVICE, NOT iCLOUD, and so I WILL NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, RESTORE THE PHONE so that it will be able to turn on, bc in so doing, it would—with 100% certainty, DESTROY FOREVER ALL my precious Photos and Videos!! It’s literally NOT an option. Unfortunately, the same thing happened to my current iPad Pro 12.9 3rd Gen (1TB). Sadly, I was in the process of getting the equipment necessary to transfer a ton of stuff to an External Solid State Drive, but before I could get all of it, it randomly shut off in the middle of me searching the web, and has NEVER turned back on. I hadn’t thought of saving anything to iCloud before that happened, although I imagine I would’ve encountered the same problem I am now, with the storage just basically switching between Photos and iCloud. Ughhh and I have (had 😣😥🙆🏼‍♀️) OVER 900Gb Photos+Videos on that!!! So I no longer currently have an iPad, I CANNOT lose my phone too!! If someone knows how to DELETE the recently accessed iCloud files from my device, but 100% KEEP them in cloud, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!! And if anyone knows a way TO STOP “recently accessed iCloud files” from being “downloaded to my device for quick access” in the first place, that info would be greatly appreciated!! And APPLE, IF YOU’RE SEEING THIS, PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT SO I DON’T CONTINUE TO LOSE DEVICES!!

My iCloud photos are disappearing Hello. Ever since I started using iCloud to store my files and photos I've still had problems with storage. These photos still take upwards of 30GB on my phone despite being stored on iCloud and I have never been able to make that go away. Recently I went into settings and toogle "Sync iCloud Drive to this phone" off and then on again. I realized that this straight up deleted the recent files from my phone, but kept it all to iCloud. I was still able to see and access them. So I kept doing this whenever my iCloud Drive took up too much space on my phone. I had the bright idea of doing this with my iCloud Photos. Toggle off and then on. It asked me to either "Remove photos from device" or download it all. I chose remove and waited a minute before toggling iCloud Photos back on again. This was a huge mistake. I noticed immedietly that my albums and the photos in those albums are disappearing. The number of photos is going DOWN and I can no longer find these photos on my phone. Not even unsorted, outside of the albums I put them in on the camera roll and timeline. When I access photos via web nothing has changed, but I am afraid these results will sync with my web as this has happened many times before, making these photos unrecoverable. I see the settings and my phone claims it is "Syncing up" with the rest of my icloud and needs to do so connected to power overnight, just like when I first set it up, but it keeps stopping and freezing because of "Lack of storage." There is NOTHING taking up my storage other than iCloud photos. And I dont understand how syncing results in REMOVING images. Doing this just made my photos take up MORE space. As I speak iCloud Photos has already deleted 12,000 images from my phone and they are not in recently deleted. I am afraid it will eventually sync with my web host computer account and wipe photos from there as well. Never to be seen again I need solutions NOW because I am not in the position to be able to schedule a talk with Apple Support. Due to the extreme uncertainties in my life's scheduling. It will all be gone by the time I can find a good time to schedule. Which may be weeks from now. These are really important photos and they all got up to too much GB (250+) for me to be able to back it up anywhere outside of iCloud. Sorted all in iCloud. I will lose so much more than just these photos, they were very important to my family and I might end up homeles if any one of these disappear.
