Why does it take so long to upload I movies on a external hard drive

Everytime I try to open i movies on my external hard drive it takes forever and just spins for hours? Why is this happening and how can I correct it?

Transfer iMovie projects to a different external hard drive to check for improved performance. Ensure the external hard drive is formatted correctly for Windows. And consider upgrading to a faster external hard drive if needed.
