iMovie 9.0.9 exporting low quality resolution even with 1080 Share option

I made a beautiful 20 minute video (professional) with high quality photographs. Project also includes music tracks, sound effects, etc. Looks great in iMovie. I upgraded from 9.0.4 to 9.0.9 to try to resolve issue but it did nothing and also lost my ripple effect transitions. I use High Sierra (cannot upgrade any further on my iMac). I export with "Share" option and choose "Movie". I've also tried Quicktime exports, but there are no options for any resolution offered. None of these produces a quality export. The dark areas have noise/discolouring, that makes video look unusable and amateur. Photos are also not as sharp. I am working around the clock to find a solution. Please can someone help? I read about installing an encoder called x264 in quicktime, but couldn't figure it out or it simply didn't work. Is there any other video editing (free) software alternatively that will accept my video from iMovie and export it with high quality? Obviously, I am in strong need to make the iMovie software work. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the reply. The pants in the photo are supposed to be black. I am exporting with "Share", "Export Movie", HD 1080p. I am now also having problems importing the photos I am using in these videos, they are now importing with this same problem (pictured above.) So, it is not simply an Export issue. I dragged this photo into the timeline and it appeared with the discoloration, exactly the same as with the Export issue.

I seem to remember reading that iMovie version 9 is not entirely compatible with any OS older than El Capitan so your issue may be down to this.

It would appear that the problems that occur in this situation vary from set-up to set-up but black stills and poor quality export seem to be common .

If you Google " is iMovie version 9 compatible with High Sierra?" then you will see what I mean.

There are some that say it works but others say it does not.

It may well be that whatever export options you try you may not overcome the possible incompatibility of version 9 with High Sierra on your system.

As you have found out, some of the transitions in ver 9.0.4 did not appear in subsequent versions from 9.0.5 to 9.0.9.

Versions 9.0.5 to 9.0.9 were for OS Lion and Mountain Lion and were all bug fixes for these OS's if I recall correctly and along the way some of the transitions were dropped. Then Mavericks came out with iMovie ver 10 ,so hardly surprising that 4 OS's later i.e.High Sierra , that High Sierra might struggle to be compatible with the older version of iMovie ver 9.

If you have iMovie version 10 then you may be able to update this project from 9 to 10.

I have never done this so cannot advise how, but others on here will know how and hopefully chime in.

Sounds like time is of the essence.

Hi again, I was on the phone with Apple and we did some tests with a 2nd computer and figured out that the OS had nothing to do with the problem. I eventually may have come across the solution, which is mind-blowing if it works, so I will take the next week to re-edit the 20 minute video and then be back in touch. My video is composed of high resolution photographs. The issue relates to importing the photos as well at this juncture, but, generally speaking, I'm composing the video and exporting it, any previously color corrected photos are not maintained, including photos I corrected within the iMovie program. In the export I discovered, that any images I had applied a hard light filter to (each film strip has a settings button to open up to make clip adjustments and video adjustments), maintained its quality in the export. I have not yet checked to see if the other available video filters would hold the quality, but I will assume they will. So, if one applies a video effect to the image, it will be maintained for the export. I will re-edit and see if it works, fingers crossed. So far, every image with the hard light filter has held its quality, it is the unfiltered images that are terrible. If you know anything about this, please write back, thank you!

So grateful for the information. Would it be better to try to find an earlier version of iMovie? How do I revert back to 9.0.4, which I have backed-up and still running on my MacBook (which I do not video edit on.)?

Using hard light filters for all of my images doesn't seem to be a good long term solution. I looked at a photo that I had put a "romantic" filter on and that had the color noise quite prevalent. The hard light filter seems to be covering up the noise. Do older iMovie versions WORK without these poor quality export (and import) issues? I also cannot find anywhere to download 10 versions (definitely not available on Apple,) and I wouldn't know if that would be a good solution. I wouldn't want to keep developing work with this problem and there do not seem to be any editing programs I can locate (that would be safe downloads) for my OS. Thanks!
