One person shows twice in Message App

On the MacOS Messages App, my wife shows up with two different message threads. Clicking on her name in each, one shows being associated with her phone number and the other is associated with her icloud.com email address. I have only one contact card for her in my Contacts app, in which I have both her email address and phone number.

Why is the Messages app maintaining two separate message threads for her? Is there any way to merge them into one thread and/or to force all of her devices (Mac, iPhone, IPad) to all use one or the other so that we don't have our message threads spread out in two different threads?

I have the same problem and have been looking for a way to combine threads. From what I've seen, this seems to be a common but not universal problem. Combining threads where they are going to one contact but separated by those sent using email address vs phone number seems like something that should be possible. I'm not even sure how Messages separated these to begin with. I've never been aware of wanting to send a text to an email vs a phone number. I guess I'm supposed to look carefully every time I send a text message and correct Messages every time it makes a mistake... Seems very un-Apple philosophy to me.

If someone knows how to combine these I'd be grateful.
