Apple Numbers for macOS - Merge cells but only horizontally

I have a Apple Numbers project sheet with over 2000 rows. The contents of column B and C should both be in column B, so we need to merge the C with B. If I just select all 4000 cells and click on "Merge cells" everything merges into one giant cell, but we only want to merge cells horizontally. How do we do this?
