not receiving tones for incoming calls or texts
I have set various tones on my iphone but there is no sound for incoming texts or phone calls

Have you checked the ring/silent switch on the left side of the phone? See the following Apple article: Use the side, Home, and other buttons on your iPhone - Apple Support
Also check the ringer volume at Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone & Alert Volume.
