When you put a phone in lost mode, you can put your number on the screen, is one way. But let's face it, bad people are really bad and they have ways to get someone's number. The good news is, they can threaten you, but they cannot wipe the phone unless your son gives them what they desperately need, which are his account credentials.
As others have suggested, since he is getting death threats, this should be reported to the authorities immediately. He should NOT interact with the thieves in any way and while difficult to do, the thieves should be ignored.

Unfortunately, this appears to be the latest extortion attempt to retrieve the user ID and password for the device. Do not interact with the perso/people with the device. Contact the police.

Report it to your local authority, there is nothing Apple can do .
Thank you for your response. His phone was stolen about 2 months ago. It was placed in lost mode right away. Yesterday he tracked his phone in Homg Kong. We are in the US. My other question is how could they get his phone number? Can you get it from the SIM card?
No one here can answer that, but remember, these are very bad people and bad people do bad things. Fortunately, we've yet to hear anyone was actually harmed when not replying to these threats.
It's awful, for sure, but report it and do NOT let him respond to anyone. They'll move on to their next victim in hopes they can scare them enough to give up their account details.
How could have they gotten his phone number from the stolen phone? It was placed in lost mode right away?
Yes he did that and put his roommates number on the screen. I am wondering how they got his phone number though? That is what really scares me. He will be reporting to authorities:)
