Compared to the 13" M2 MacBook Air, the 14" and 16" M2 Pro/Max MacBook Pros are more powerful, have nicer/larger screens, offer more connectivity, allow more than one external display, and support higher RAM/SSD.

If those factors are important to you, then you should get a 14" or 16"

It really depends on what your budget is, and what you need.

There are three levels in the current Mac notebook line:

  • 13" and 15" MacBook Airs
  • 14" and 16" MacBook Pros using the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips
  • 14" MacBook Pros using the base M3 chip. These have mini-LED backlit screens, HDMI ports, and SDXC slots, like their MacBook Pro siblings. But they have some limits similar to those of other Macs that use base M2 and base M3 chips.

The 16" MacBook Pros are significantly heavier than any of the other machines, which might be a consideration if you'll be carrying a machine around all day.

It sounds like you're buying this for use at a university. I would suggest contacting the university and seeing what they support or recommend in the way of computers. Some universities and programs of study may be very Mac-friendly or very platform-agnostic. In other cases, there might be a requirement to run specific applications which only run on Windows PCs.
