Safari won't load on my iMac post macOS Ventura update

immediately after software update ventura 13.6.5 safari will not load webpages and displays 'this webpage was reloaded because a problem occurred' which keeps scrolling.

Other browsers work ok and cannot find anything else causing the problem.

Have restarted in safe mode and still problem exists.

Is this the end of safari on my mac?

Hey there! That sounds frustrating, having Safari constantly reload webpages with that "problem occurred" message after updating to Ventura 13.6.5. Don't worry, it's definitely not the end of Safari on your Mac! Here are a few things we can try to get things working smoothly again:

  1. Compatibility Check: First things first, let's make sure your Mac can run Ventura. Head over to Apple's website macOS Ventura is compatible with these computers - Apple Support and check if your model is listed. If not, we can focus on updating to the latest supported macOS version for your machine.
  2. Re-download the Installer: Corrupted downloads happen! Restart your Mac, then move the "Install macOS Ventura" app to Trash (if present). Head back to the App Store, search for "macOS Ventura" again, and re-download the installer. Give the update another shot after that.
  3. Safe Mode and Disk Utility: If a re-download doesn't fix things, try booting into Safe Mode (hold Shift during startup) and attempt the update again. Safe Mode can clear software conflicts that might be causing the problem. While in Safe Mode, open Disk Utility to verify and repair your disk. Think of it as a check-up to fix any underlying issues preventing the update.
  4. Reset SMC and PRAM (Optional): In rare cases, resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) and PRAM (Parameter RAM) can resolve software glitches. However, these resets might affect some settings, so be sure to back up your data first! If you'd like to try this step, let me know and I can guide you through it.
  5. Contact Apple Support (if needed): If none of these solutions work their magic, Apple Support has advanced tools to diagnose the issue further.
  6. App Store Update Workaround: Since you can't install apps, try using Safari to access the App Store for updates instead of the App Store app itself. Safari might be a more reliable path for updates right now.

Launch Safari with the Shift key held down.

If that doesn't help give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

  1. Its a retina 5k 2017 so within parameters.
  2. Have reloaded Ventura twice without success
  3. Have opened in safe mode twice but without success
  4. Haven't reset SMC or PRAM yet as I know some settings will be affected and not convinced its relevant in this case.
  5. I don't use any cleaning, optimizing, speed-ups, anti-virus or VPN on this mac or extensions

I will attempt to delete the safari preferences.plist and History.plist and report back later

My suggestion is to try another browser. I've been using Apple products since the 1990s

and have found the operating systems and browser to be more and more buggy and that it

is taking Apple longer and longer to work out the kinks. For folks having issues with the browser

not opening particular websites, this may also tell you whether this is a function of Safari 17.4 or,

perhaps, the security changes in the operating system upgrade to 13.6.5. I hope this helps.
