Dictation not responding on MacBook Pro

Hi LG,

I recently faced the same issue with Dictation on my MacBook and finally found a fix that worked for me.

In my case, the problem was with the microphone source. I often switch between a BLE headset and the MacBook microphone, and it seems the "automatic" selection feature doesn’t always work as expected.

Manually switching the microphone source to the MacBook Pro Microphone resolved the issue instantly.

That's hilarious! My 2019 Macbook quit doing dictation years ago and Apple promised then that they were aware and "almost" had a solution. Of course, nothing ever fixed it.

Fast forward to today as I set up my brand spanking new MacBook Pro...I'm ready to see if a lot of bugs from the old machine are now resolved. Despite the time and upgrades, still no dictation!

Glad to know though that Apple is aware and will soon have a solution.

Exactly the same for me after restarted it works again super frustrating it is now months later and is even with Sequoia the issue still exists

Same here. M3 pro max dictation stops working every couple of hours and have the restart the mac. Pretty disrupting to say the least.

does it not work in any app, including Safari, Mail, notes, messages, pages?

The language you are dictating in is English?

Absolutely!! I noticed the same thing after using my AirPods

Have the same issue... fix it every time by restarting... this is feeling more of a windows comp... annoying... but it works.

Sorry I don't know the answer but I did laugh at your comment about it being like your teenager!!

Here's a workaround.

Change your system language to other than US English. In my case, from US English to Korean and NZ English. Now it works fine!

Hello All. I had this issue. What I discovered was that to the left of the dictation screen there is a microphone icon (which I wasn't aware of as being something I could toggle). I had to select the carrot i.e. the arrow, and change the selection from Aggregate Device, to Internal Microphone, the it started picking up my voice. See pic.

M2 Macbook Pro is still at the Apple certified repair center they are still trying with no luck and no success even with help from Apple getting involved.

I'm just going to pick it up as is.

I’m sorry to hear yours is not working, mine worked fluently whenever I did what I read. Which was, go to dictation, and then click off of click on English onto some other language and hit apply, close it, and then go back in dictation, click on English, and then hit apply. When activating the dictation, you have to double click your function “fn” button. My little mic at the top of my keyboard does not work with dictation, but the old way, double clicking, works!

Hi, I was having the same issue with my MacBook Pro 13-inch, M1, 2020, and I found out that every time I was using dictation and switching to either Safari on privacy mode or Opera using VPN, dictation will stop responding, the only workaround that I found in my case was to go to settings search for Dictation and toggle the switch on and off. I left the setting window open. If Dictation stop responding I will do the same thing again toggle the dictation switch on and off. It is an annoying solution but so far is working.
