virus notifications on iMac

my iMac gets continuous messages with the preferences icon showing up on the top right of the screen advising "5 viruses infected iMac" or "13 viruses infected iMac" or "malicious malware infected iMac". I don't know if they are real or not or how to stop them. I have malwarebites installed and it runs several times daily and it shows no viruses. What should I do?
