ios 17/iphone 15 hotspot issues

Ever since I got my iphone 15, I haven't been able to get any signal from my mobile hotspot. I am able to connect to my mac, but nothing loads. I found that this is a common problem from this reddit thread. I was able to solve the issue by following a comment on the thread as follows:

Your Macbook is connecting to your iPhone via ipv6 and not ipv4, I had the same error. My fix currently, is to set a new location under Networks, and set it up as the following. So I have a Network location for 'Automatic' which will use default network settings for all connections. Then swap to one I made called 'Hotspot' which has manual router settings. Your OpenVPN will work if you set it up like in the link.

What I did personally was create a new network location called Hotspot by going to Network under settings. In the Network tab, click the three dots in the bottom right corner, hover over Locations, and add a new one. In the new location, connect to your hotspot network. Then, click on details in for the wifi network. Set ipv4 under TCP/IP to manual, rather than DHCP. Set the IP, router and subnet mask in there with the following:

IP Address: 172.20.10.11
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Router: 172.20.10.1

Then go into DNS under wifi details and add 172.20.10.1.

Whenever you want to use your hotspot, switch to location Hotspot. Whenever you want to use another wifi network that already works for you, switch back to location Automatic.

This is the only thing that worked for me. I tried so many other things, and wanted to share this for other people having the same issue. This is a huge problem, and prevented me from working as I needed to. Apple needs to fix this.

This solution worked for me, except I only had to CREATE the Hotspot Location on my Macbook.

Here's exactly what I did:

  1. From my Macbook, connect to the personal hotspot. It connected but gave the "No IP address" message on the wifi settings.
  2. As described in the first post above, I created the new "Hotspot" location. I did NOT switch to this new location. I just created it.
  3. After a few seconds, the network connection started working.

I think the network configuration on my Macbook was in a bad state, and creating the new location reset it.
