Do both airpods need to be in the case for them to connect to a new device?

One of the airpods is missing and im wondering if they can still connect

Can you pair your AirPods to your phone if you have a generic case? My daughter has the newer AirPods. She lost her case and bought one off Amazon. It wasn’t apple. Now she can’t get it to pair with her phone. Is there anyway around this??

The one AirPod should connect. If you replace the missing one you will have to reset the case, forget it on the phone, then set it up again.
