I have Time Machine with an external device provided by Apple. I understood that upon reaching its capacity, the oldest files would be removed to accommodate current backups. I have been receiving messages that my Time Machine is not being backed up.
This sounds more like a problem with the external backup drive than the way Time Machine works.
At this point we can only help, if you provide more complete details about the Mac and about the external backup drive.
