I am unable to Sync my iPhone 12 PRO Max running 17.2.1 over USB to my MacBook running Ventura 13.5.2. My phone is recognized in the Finder Window. When I click on Sync It hangs up in step 3 of 6 and just keeps running and never advances past step 3 of 6. I can't even cancel the Sync process! I need this feature to work as I do not back up to iCloud.

It’s an issue that started with 17.2, I believe. You have to open the Activity Monitor app, under Applications/Utilities, and force quit “MDCrashReportTool”. I don’t know if this messes up the sync but this is the only way I know, as of now, to get the process unstuck.
Thanks, stopping MDCRASHREPORTTOOL definitely fixes the problem — although this stopping must be done with every iPhone (though not iPad?) sync.
I’m also reading on here that this MDCRASHREPORTTOOL issue has persisted for some years, prior to iOS 17.2.
This is still happening for both my spouse (iPhone 13/iOS 17.3.1 to MacBook Air/MacOS 14.3.1 via lightning cable or via WiFi) and myself (iPhone 15/iOS 17.3.1 to MacBook Pro MacOS 14.3.1 via USB-C cable.
Apple please fix this glaring error!
I have roughly the same problem, except that Finder immediately "cancels sync" after connecting my iPhone 13 (iOs 17.2.1) via Apple Lightning cable to Mac Studio running Sonoma 14.2.1.
Problem seems to have started with update to iOs 17.2 or 17.2.1.
I have no problem with my iPhone 12 Mini and Ventura on my iMac. However, every time I apply an update to my iPhone the first time I plug in my iPhone I get this message which I accept:
I do have problems syncing to my iPhone via the Finder. What I've done is after I click on sync I immediately click on Don't Backup and have to enter my access code on my iPhone. The it starts at 3 and seems to hang.
I then unplug the iPhone, plug it back in and start the sync again. Again I click on Don't Backup, enter my passcode and click several times on the Don't Backup button. This just the process to Step 4 (if I have items to upload) or 5 (if I'm only removing files from my iPhone) and it compete quickly. Yes, a PITA but it's a working workaround
No , it hasn’t. Still hanging at 17.3.1.

You might already have done so, but upgrading to 17.3 seems to have resolved the issue.
