Older trackpad v 1.6 not clicking & dragging with MacBook Air 2020

Hello, my apple magic trackpad v1.6 doesn't let me click and drag anymore and I wonder if it's broken or is too old and needs to be replaced. I can click by tapping, no problems, but if I try to click & drag, there is no clicking at all, so this is not recognised.

I have a MacBook Air 2020, and it used to work find till about 6 months ago.

I have gone into Settings > Trackpad > turned off force clic and haptic feedback, based on google.

I have gone into bluetooth, forgot trackpad and reconnected it.

My software is up to date.

Do I just simply need to buy a new one? Or is it something I'm missing in settings.

Thank you!

Good morning,

So this started BEFORE updating to macOS Sonoma?

...my apple magic trackpad v1.6...

I think you have the original trackpad but "v1.6" does not say which of the two external Trackpad options you have. Can you confirm yours by its model number:

  • The original was A1339 and ran on AA batteries
  • The newer model is A1535 and is rechargeable via a Lightning cable.

Model numbers are in a painfully tiny font size on the bottom of the trackpad:

Both trackpad versions can receive software updates, but the only such updater I found was this released in 2010:

Download Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0

Have you tried reseting the SMC?

Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

Note that there are different reset methods depending on the processor type. In 202O, Apple used both Intel and Apple Silicon processors in Macbook Airs. "About this Mac..." will tell you which processor you have.

I cannot find any official pronunciation about hardware/OS requirement changes for the older version.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for your message! It's a A1339 model.

This only started 3 or so months ago, I'm on Sonoma 14.1. So maybe it did have something to do with it?

I also had no idea that I could download updates for the tracker. I tried this but got this message.

And will reset the SMC when I'm not in the middle of work later on, as I can't afford any downtime.

I really appreciate your help.
