The software update obviusly canot be completed due to the model of my Mac and OS. The goal is to continue transfering music from my Mac to the phone.

With the iPhone 15 (and iOS 17), Apple raised the minimum requirement for the Mac from El Capitain 10.11.6 to High Sierra. Your Mac can't upgrade past El Capitan, so there's no way for you to use iTunes to manage your new phone.

You may want to look into a commercial application called iMazing. I believe that it does run on El Capitan and that it can manage iPhones running iOS 17.
