Finder taking very long to open and load

Finder is taking very long to open/load. Even when I am downloading files from the browser (usually downloading requires finder to confirm save location) it can take more than 5 minutes to open.

  • I've never actually waited more than 5 minutes because I would force quit the app.

  • In the force quit window it does show that finder is not responding.

  • Relaunching after force quit still gives me the same problem.

  • Also tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and restarting the computer

  • Now the finder loads a bit faster but still way too slow.

Would appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Try one of these two…

You can use Drive DX to possibly get a better view of Drive health…

Thanks to Jack-19…

It may be wise to run SMART Utility to check the drives' health.

The fileproviderd process on Mac is a daemon that manages cloud-based file providers, such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, iCloud, Office 365, and Adobe InDesign. It runs in the background but can be found in Activity Monitor.

So, it appears. you have trouble with Google Drive.
