Mac Mail Trash won’t Empty. When I Delete the Trash All the Emails Come Back in the Trash

I am on an IMac Pro running Monterey. It’s really strange - my Mac Mail trash won’t empty.

The issue seems to be from one email account. I have archived it; deleted the email account, but the emails still won’t delete! I’ll deleted the trash and then the deleted emails just start loading back into the trash!

I was having a lot of computer problems anyway so I completely reformatted the hard drive and started over from scratch. The computer works great now! However this weird email situation is still there.

Also, before I reformatted the hard drive my Mac Mail was just wonky overall. Email content wasn’t showing up. Meaning when I clicked on one of the emails the viewer window was blank. This was happening on all accounts. Sometimes when I quit the mail program and opened it back up the email content would show up but then would eventually stop showing up.

Another thing is that the Search function pretty much stopped working. It would just hang and say “searching.”

I’ve tried everything I know…rebuilding the mailboxes, reformatting the hard drive, etc

I’m out of ideas!

Any help would be great!

If you're experiencing issues with the Mac Mail Trash not emptying and emails reappearing after deletion, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. **Force Quit Mail:**

- Close the Mail application completely. You can do this by right-clicking on the Mail icon in the Dock and selecting "Quit" or by using the "Command + Q" keyboard shortcut.

- After quitting Mail, reopen it and try emptying the Trash again.

2. **Rebuild Mailbox:**

- In the Mail application, go to the "Mailbox" menu.

- Choose "Rebuild" for the mailbox that is causing issues. This will rebuild the mailbox and may fix any corruption.

3. **Remove Emails Manually:**

- Open the Trash mailbox in Mail.

- Manually select and delete each email individually. Sometimes, this can resolve issues with certain messages causing problems during the delete process.

4. **Restart Your Mac:**

- Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve software glitches. Restart your Mac and try emptying the Trash again.

5. **Check for macOS Updates:**

- Ensure that your macOS is up to date. Sometimes, issues like this are addressed in software updates.

6. **Use Disk Utility:**

- Open Disk Utility (you can find it in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder).

- Select your startup disk and click on "First Aid" to check and repair disk permissions and structure.

7. **Use Terminal:**

- Open Terminal (you can find it in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder).

- Type the following command and press Enter:

rm -rf ~/.Trash/*

- This command will forcefully remove all files from the Trash. Be cautious when using the Terminal, as it gives you powerful control over your system.

8. **Check Mail Settings:**

- Go to "Mail" > "Preferences" > "Accounts."

- Select the email account that is causing the issue.

- Go to the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab and ensure that the settings for Trash and Junk match your preferences.

9. **Create a New Mailbox:**

- Create a new mailbox and move the emails from the problematic Trash to the new mailbox. Try deleting the new mailbox to see if the issue persists.

10. **Backup and Reinstall Mail:**

- Backup your Mail data.

- Remove the Mail app from your Applications folder.

- Download the latest version of Mail from the App Store and reinstall it.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, it may be worth reaching out to Apple Support for further assistance, as there could be a more complex issue that requires specialized attention.
