Another possibility is that the firmware on the airPods may need updating.

Eg: The computer or device that the airpods are paired with would need the latest Mac OS, or iOS installed, in order for the airpods to update automatically. See: About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support

If needed: Tip: Leave AirPods connected to power overnight with the iPhone connected to wi-fi close by, so they can update automatically
