I can’t swipe up on my Apple Watch to see the battery

I can no longer swipe up on my Apple Watch to see the battery. It seems to have changed overnight (possibly while I was wearing it, or when it ran out of battery, or when I plugged it back in to charge). Now when I swipe up I see a menu of apps, which is not at all helpful since what I really want to know is how much charge is left!!! I am able to go to settings and look and it shows 83% right now but that’s pretty tedious and honestly it is one of the things I check most often. Neither a hard nor soft restart fixed it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
