Issue with email on Mac

I'm running an iMac OS Monterey V 12.7.1 and Mail app V 16.0 (3696.120.41.4).

The issue is that downloading emails, it take a long, long time before the emails are finally downloaded.

I've verified on the Google Mail app on GMAIL and the downloades are fast.

I suspect there is a parameter issue, and perhaps a "corrupt" Apple MAIL app which needs to be thrown away and install a NEW one.

Please help me solve this issue.

Thanks, Barbara

Please do the following:

  1. Unplug modem and router from power for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Plug them back in.
  3. Restart Mac in Safe Mode and then restart normally.
  4. Test

Also, check to see if there are any updates for Mac OS for your computer. If there are please install them.

Finally, do you have any of the following types of third party apps installed on the computer?

  • Antivirus
  • Cleaning
  • Security
  • VPN
  • Maintenance

Well the first thing to do is uninstall the AV app you installed per the developers instructions!!! Next, please do the following:

Well there are multiple issues with your machine. First, the Apple Security has been disabled and that needs to be addressed ASAP. This is evidenced in the report by:

"Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection."

To fix that please click Change Privacy & Security settings on Mac - Apple Support

If you need further assistance or you don't understand then please call AppleCare. The USA phone number is (800) 275-2273, if you are outside the USA please click AppleCare Contact Info to find the phone number for your area.

Also, you own a 2015 21.5" display with a glacially slow 5400 RPM HD. The HD is the bottleneck in these vintage computers and this means the computer will ALWAYS be slow. Were the machine mine, I would replace it with a current 24" iMac which would speed up your computer dramatically. If a new computer replacement is out of the question, consider Apple offers financing (use AppleCard) which is interest free. Also, Apple offers refurbished computers (navigate to www.apple.com and scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the refurbished link). Apple refurbished devices have ZERO downside, they are identical to new, have the same warranty as new, are eligible for AppleCare and can save hundreds of $$$. You can select from iMacs, Mac minis, Mac Studios, MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros, etc.

Finally, you can buy a used Mac. If this something you would consider please only purchase from a reputable reseller such as Macsales.com. NEVER EVER buy from places like: Ebay, Marketplace, Craigslist, your local computer store, Amazon, etc.......... Very often you are buying devices that have problems already, were not set up correctly for resales, etc.

We are all end users just like you, you are not addressing Apple's Support Team. Apple is simply our hosts, they do not participate in these forums. If you want to speak directly to Apple you can either visit your local Apple Authorized Service Provider or you can call AppleCare.

1- I did as requested: restarted in safe mode, and then restart normally, and tested and the first email downloaded fast with all the text included. The following email (which was yours) only the header appeared, and the rest is blank..... I am enclosing a photo of the email for your information.

IMPORTANT: I am now writing to you from SAFARI > GMAIL > directly and not thru MAIL.

2- There are no new updates for the Mac OS for this computer.

HOWEVER: I did notice that on the APPLE LOGO on the top left, it showed iMac OS Monterey 12.7.1 but in this message (ask the community) it seems like I am running MAC OS 12.6.

Perhaps I do need to try to REINSTALL macOS.

3- Third party apps: That I am aware of, the honest answer WAS 2 days ago NO; yesterday I installed INTEGO SOFTWARE to try to solve this MAIL issue. Remember please that my issue was BEFORE I had installed this "Cleaner". Everything else is working just fine.

4- All other apps are responding well. If I open GMAIL directly, and use GMAIL on my Safari Browser, it works just fine. There is no sign of delays.

5- Is there a way to DELETE MAIL, and download a "new" MAIL app? Perhaps MAIL is corrupted somehow.

Please help and advise.

Have followed your suggestions; I just finished the download and re-installation of Monterey 12.7.1 and uninstalled the "Washing Machine" from INTEGO [which I had just installed a day ago, so that could not be the issue]; and I have installed and ran the EtreCheck for you. The report is on the desktop. It is approximately 269 Kb of information. How do I attach this report? I tried to send it but I could not! Please let me know how best to send it [it is 6 pages long].

Thanks for all the help you can provide us.

I have received your analysis and will check the machine and get back to you.

I do find some comments "strange" probably due to terminology. Going thru the "Security and Privacy" I can NOT locate some of the items you are suggesting. "Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection." OUR FIREWALL IS ON and we have "certain" apps allowed to access our machine. Apple Security IS NOT DISABLED!! On the PRIVACY tab > Enable Locatiion Services is ON. [We don't care to have our contacts or calendar or reminders, or photos clicked ON so others can access them. We never have!

More important, the computer is running at a reasonable rate of speed Yes, slower than the new computers and much slower than the new A1 or M1. The issue is not that. The issue is the OPENING OF MAIL and the downloading of Mail..... that is all! There are no other issues.

So, are you telling me that we need to have a password to log in everytime we turn the computer on?

Do we need to have ON the FIREVAULT? Will this solve the issue with MAIL ??

If you would be more specific and tell us (aside from the HD) where the problem exists, we can then FIX it. However, when instructions are given, please make sure that you are sending instructions for a MONTEREY and not another operating system. We realize that the HD is old and we appreciate your letting us know we have a "VINTAGE" machine. We are "vintage" folks, but we are not dead as yet.

Trusting you will send us better guidelines as to why the MAIL is so slow, I remain,

Sincerely, Vintage Barbara [74] and Vintage Ripe Richard [78]

Apple Security is ON.

I assume that you have gone through the report generated by EtreCheckPro.

They state: SECURITY: Gatekeeper: OK; System Integrity Prot: ENABLED; Antivirus: NONE

Security Updates: Disabled. All this means is that I [the administrator] is the one that will ALLOW updates after having been advised. I will not allow (nor have I ever allowed in my 25 years + working with Mac OS) to have AAPL simply download security updates at will. They advise me, and I then give the OK, and they are downloaded.

What I need to ask you is to tell me what are, and where are, the "unsigned software files" installed so I may locate them. These UNSIGNED FILES are probably old - VINTAGE - from when we first bought the computer back in 2015. Since then AAPL has gone through THREE major OS changes, and switched from Intel chips to the A1 silicon chips. It is most probable that when upgrading and downloading, some (or many) of the old files were left behind.

I only see the ones of the Epson Printer. But those are also relatively new. TRhere must be some in the HD that go back 7-8 years. Where are they?

So.... If you can identify them for me, I will take care of them.

Apple will NOT service our computer because it is "obsolete". They won't even take my call, even if I'm willing to pay someone to help out. It is so much easier to follow the simple route of "buy a new one". If I have to, I will, but it is important to understand that the ONLY issue we are having is with MAIL .... APPLE MAIL. I can use GMail, and it flies; no problem at all!

So, I'm asking again: Can someone of the COMMUNITY help me to pinpoint where these unsigned files are?? I'm sure that if and when I can get rid of them, the old HD will just move a little faster and improve my MAIL issues.

Talk to me man, help me out!

Nov 11, 2023 05:36 PM in response to rbfrank

I wouldn't worry about the unsigned files right now, I\ve seen many reports with that & I think they're just APPs purchased outside the App Store, & some of the best & most useful software is not on the Appstore.

Try one of these two…

You can use Drive DX to possibly get a better view of Drive health…

Thanks to Jack-19…

It may be wise to run SMART Utility to check the drives' health.

Nov 12, 2023 10:25 AM in response to BDAqua

To BDAqua: Thanks for your feedback. Drive DX did not show any abnormalities.

Thanks to Jack-19: Smart Utility showed no failures ; in bold: NEVER

EtreCheck reported:

a]- Performance: GOOD

b]- Unsigned files: only ONE --> The Epson [Seiko] Work Force Pro WF-3823 printer

c]- Apple security disabled: YES; I request the security updates when advised.

d]- System Modification: Naturally; since we purchased this computer in 2015, there have been "many" Mac OS changes. The one we run right now is the Monterey 12.7.1 which is the LAST ONE that can run with the old Intel Dual Core i5. It cannot go on! It is an old computer; Apple calls it a VINTAGE computer.

With all these figures and analysis and opinions, not one points to the only problem we are witnessing: APPLE MAIL is not working well!

You may ask "does GMAIL work well?" It zips along; no problem at all .

All other apps work well; a bit slow in some cases (because it is a vintage machine). No where is there a clear and concise answer as to WHY DOES APPLE MAIL not download well?

*** We have 2 Apple SE iPhones; We have 2 new iPads ...... The Apple MAIL works super WELL in all of these devices. Why does it NOT work correctly on the iiMac?

Am I being forced to buy a new iMac for $1500+ because the MAIL doesn't work? Is that fair practice? What gives? There must be someone that can tell me how to download a NEW MAIL.

Apple owner and user since 1978! Will I be forced to buy a new $1500+ iMac because the support team does not want to help me out?
