I'm not sure how to get a new version of MS Office. My old one became obsolete. I have used the Apple products (Pages, Numbers) but I really don't like them.

On Apple app store, I see Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but I don't see what they cost. I've been thinking about going directly to the Microsoft website to order/download, but don't know if that would be the best way. Do you have a recommendation?

directly from Apple, then you downloads the app and sign into your account.
they are free but in order to edit and save you need a office 365 subscription with Microsoft
you can also try Home | LibreOffice - Free Office Suite - Based on OpenOffice - Compatible with Microsoft
