WD MyCloud Time Machine backup drive no longer connecting to MBA with Sonoma

Been using a WD MyCloud NAS for about 4 years. Running Time Machine backups to 2 MacBook Air M1's. No problems. About a month ago, upgraded to Sonoma on one of the MBA's. The backups started to become problematic. Taking a lot longer to connect.

So, I thought I would disconnect the drive from the System Settings TM preferences and reinstall it. Now it won't load again. I can mount the drive on the desktop and access all of the backups with no problem. Just gives an error message after about 15 seconds when trying to add the drive to the TM system setting prefs. Have to force quit Time Machine System Settings. Get this: Settings Error-Extensions Process Time Machine (8178) exited.

Have tried restarting the WD device, the MacBook Air, checked all of the settings. No go.

I viewed some of the previous discussions about similar problems, but none using Sonoma.

Any help is appreciated.

Yesterday I found out the hard way, that Sonoma 14.1.1 (and 14.1.2) DOES NOT RESTORE OR MIGRATE from a WD NAS! The usual Guest access is inaccessible.

All my Time Machine files are OK, backup was (and is) done regularly and without any fuss, I can access the NAS anyway I want,.... except when I really need it!

Workaround:

Regular external drive, directly connected to the Mac (Air, M1, 2020).

Not happy...

This does sound like your external drive is failing. Four to five years seems to be about the time some of these drives fail for some reason.

Since it appears the drive mounts with no problem, have you tried running Disk Utility-->First Aid and see if any errors are noted?
