How can you directly upload a PNG hand-written signature that can be used in Preview? Currently, the only option to add a signature is through the trackpad, iPhone, or camera. However, when I used the MacBook camera to take a picture, the quality was not great.
The best option would be to import the file directly for Preview to use, however I'm not sure how that can be done.

Preview has no provision for importing external images or PDFs as signatures. You have already mentioned the only signature capturing options for Preview. There is a ritual for pasting an image onto a PDF in Preview which may or may not work for you.
If you have a PDF editor (not Preview) you can add an image or PDF signature to the existing PDF, or add this media to a word processing document before saving to PDF.
