When I am connected to car play through my USB-C cord, people on the receiving end of my calls hear a terrible echo throughout the phone call, yet this does not happen when I am connected to my car through bluetooth and make a call. I have seen other posts about this but I am wondering if anyone has found a solution yet?

Same! From the message boards, it looks like Apple Support has been successfully avoiding actually addressing this problem for several years. After some testing I am pretty certain the mic on my phone is still functional. So when the other caller speaks, the sound comes out of my speakers and back through my phone mic. So they get the sound from my vehicle mic (me) and also the sound from my phone (them). Seems like the software would disable the phone mic during a call and default to the vehicle mic. I can’t figure it out. I guess I just won’t use CarPlay. What does Apple care???? We don’t pay extra for that feature.

I'm not defending Apple, but this might have more to do than
just CarPlay software, did you try to talk with VW?
I google a lot of posts regarding the vw CarPlay issue and I
think it might be a vw software not apple.

I installed wireless apple CarPlay kit, and the echo went
away.
Siple fix for $70.00 VW should pay for it.
