Using a 2017 iMac as an external display for my 2013 (late) Mac Pro -trashcan.

I mainly use my 2013 trashcan Mac with a monitor, and just have a 2017 iMac sitting unused next to it. Since universal control isn't included in macOS Monterey 12.7.1 (The latest update available for this trashcan Mac), is there anyway of connecting/ using my 2017 iMac as an external display?

I am a student and this would be very very helpful if I could find out how to do this,

Thanks :D

Mac Pro, macOS 12.7

A: for Full-motion Video? NO.

In a window on almost any MacOS 10.4 or later Mac: Yes, using Screen Sharing, up to the maximum 4K size supported (at low refresh rate) by the built-in HDMI port, PROVIDED you also install a "Null Display" device like this one onto the HDMI port on the Mac Pro 2013:

NewerTech HDMI Headless 4K Display Emulator - US$12.99 - MacSales.com

Catch-22 is you can't ENABLE Screen Sharing unless you have a working local display connected, such as a real display or TV set.

The Null Display adapter is applied to the HDMI port on the Mac Pro 2013, which DOES have an HDMI port. This forces MacOS to create a display buffer, as if it were an actual display. Then all other displays can be removed.

Then Screen Sharing allows that image to be shared to whatever Mac you wish. It is displayed in a screen sharing window. You can try Screen Sharing right now, if the Mac Pro 2013 has a display attached.

NB>>. this is NOT a full Motion Video connection!! it depends completely on the speed of your computer-to-compter connection, and Ethernet is highly recommended.

If both computers are using the same Router to get Internet access, there is already a connection between them, you just don't use it every day. It is Provided by the local SWITCH function in your Router, and does NOT send any data onto the Internet.
