I couldn't reply to the other question, it's very old now & archived but has wrong top answer.

This fee is charged by Apple and not your career, so it's essentially hidden price of the phone and goes directly to apple.

If you are activating phone with a provider, however, they waive this additional charge.

But it is NOT activation fee as apple is trying to market.

For example in my case, I am on pre-paid plan and there is no activation fee. I asked Apple store representative and they told me I have to pay Apple this $30 fee.

I hope this helps everyone who is looking for right answer.

If buying a new iPhone - Apple is currently providing a $30 credit. If the carrier is Verizon, they charge a $35 fee that is due later when the activation is processed. To avoid that fee, pay $30 to Apple and swap the device without an activation fee. Apple is just capturing revenue.

On an iPhone 15 "starting at $799" - it does not seem possible to buy that base model phone at $799 unless activating a carrier when it's Verizon, there will still be a $5 additional charge or a $30 fee added at the time of purchase.
