Your iPhone will back up to iCloud overnight if the phone is locked, connected to power and connected to Wi-Fi.

If it doesn’t go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud/iCloud Backup and start a manual backup to see any error messages.

I can’t say why Apple says it must be locked, unless it is to assure that you are not updating something in the middle of the backup. You will see the result of the backup when you next go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud/iCloud Backup, or when you connect the phone to your computer. As a backup usually only takes a few minutes it doesn’t have to be locked for long.

If you are using it you can always initiate a manual backup and wait for it to complete, again, this only takes a few minutes.
