It means it was sold to the original buyer or the store from which you purchased as is - without warranty from Apple. These have the date Apple was founded April 1978 I believe. These are often old demo models or the original buyer agreed with Apple to purchase the phone without warranty.

… you might not have much “standing.”
You should probably approach Apple representatives keeping that in mind.
From where did you purchase the phone? If from Apple then you’ll need to visit a Genius Bar or contact Apple direct.
