The message that you see may refer to a Carrier Update - and not system software update.

A Carrier Update should install automatically if/when available. Assuming that you have a WiFi+Cellular model iPad - and an active Cellular Plan for your installed DataSIM or eSIM - a Carrier Update can be installed from iPad settings:

Settings > General > About

The current Carrier Update will be show adjacent to Network Provider. For iPadOS 16.x, you may see iPad 54.0; for iPadOS 17, iPadOS 55.0 is current.

You may need to reset your Network Settings and/or Subscriber Services - but before doing so, you would be best advised to contact your Cellular provider for advice.

Should you need to reset these settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset

  • Reset Network Settings
  • Reset Subscriber Services
