using Duplicates folder in Photos app

MacBook Pro 2021 running Sonoma 14.0 - app says "Photos scans your Library to find duplicates. Scanning will continue when you're not using the app and your Mac is connected to power."

The duplicate folder is there, but never shows any found duplicates. Does not using the app mean quit, or minimized, or running in the background? I have 2 rather large libraries and it seems to work OK with one but never finds duplicates in the other. I read here that the folder will not even appear if there are no duplicates. Situation was extant before upgrading to Sonoma.

Appreciate any tips, tks.

Thanks Brian - no problem with the app being frozen or unresponsive. I just can't figure out whether it has scanned my library for duplicates and not found any (unlikely - I've found duplicates by searching for assigned keywords), or whether it has actually performed a scan at all.

Hey andrewfromeast wareham,

Great question! When you're not using the app and selecting the red or yellow buttons on the app, it will still be running in the background. To completely quit out of the app, you need to open the app > select the app name on the top left corner of your screen > select 'Quit (app name).

If the app appears to be frozen and not responsive, you can force quit the app by following the steps from this article:

How to force an app to quit on your Mac - Apple Support
