iMac 27" 2017 5K needs more space and memory

How do I go about adding more memory to my iMac 2017 5K. it Currently has 16GB but needs more to operate. I can't even open Google Chrome, Teams or Zoom on my computer right now because I need more space it says. I have removed so much from this computer and added photos to an external hard drive, etc. My Remote Desktop for work seems to have taken over my entire computer and made it run out of available memory/space.

Do I just buy something and install my self or do I need go to the Apple Store? I watched the tutorial but I am not even sure where to buy the extra stuff to put into the slots on the back of the computer.

Help.

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 13.3

Memory (RAM) and storage space / drive space are different things.

RAM is a fast working area that the processor needs. It loses all of its contents whenever you reset the computer or turn the power off.

It sounds like with your photos, you are running out of internal and external storage space - not out of RAM. Certain types of advanced photo processing can be demanding on RAM, but that is a separate issue.

Your problem is not that it doesn't have adequate RAM. Even with 8GB of RAM Chrome should launch unless there is something else wrong.

However in order for us to tell what may be causing your problem we need to know what has been installed on it and more information about the Mac itself. Please do the following and so we can help you out.
