I bought some AirPods just a few days ago and they say ACCESSORY_MODEL_NAME_36 and I don’t know why. I can’t seem to connect it to find my and it doesn’t properly show up for head phones too

I was having the same issue but haven't updated my iPhone to iOS 17 yet, but after I did the name now correctly shows "AirPods Pro" and it listed on FindMy, hope this helps!

Try resetting your AirPods using the steps in the article below:
After resetting them, try pairing them again. If the name remains the same, it is plausible thats the name that was selected for them by a previous vender or owner etc, if that's the case , you can simply rename them.

The word from Apple Support is that iOS 17 or MacOS 14 is required for full functionality, including FindMy. The product compatibility list includes iPhoneX which obviously cannot be upgraded to iOS17, but Apple Support does not care about how this product was mislabeled.
