Watch Ser 8 Slide up and slide left and right not working - no quick access to Control Centre

Watch series 8 Software watchOS10.0.1

iPhone 13 Pro Max - Software version iOS 17.0.2

Since this latest upgrade I can no longer slide up on my watch face to get to control centre. Sliding to the left and right to change watch faces also does not work.

Sliding up continually brings up the Smart Stack that I get by rotating the Digital Crown.

Solutions tried:

Turn off both, turn on both
Unpairing the watch and then repairing to iPhone.
Toggling the Haptic Touch settings I read in some solutions

What’s my next option anyone?

The gestures have changed in WatchOS 10.

To open Control Center, press the side button (not the Digital Crown).

To swipe to a different watch face, 1-second firm press on the display then when it changes to show an Edit option, swipe as before or turn the Digital Crown to select a new face. Tap to confirm.
