This covers StandBy and it's expected behavior: Use StandBy to view information at a distance while iPhone is charging

If you're using a MagSafe charger, then you can check the firmware version and update it, if needed. Here's how:

1. Go to Settings > General > About (While your iPhone is connect to the charger. It can take 5 minutes to appear here. If the version is lower than 274.0.0.0, then follow the steps below.)
   1. Use your iPhone until it reaches 10% charge.
   2. Make sure the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and can connect to the Internet.
   3. Attach your iPhone and MagSafe charger and leave it to charge until it reaches 90%.
   4. Verify the firmware version again in Settings > General > About > [MagSafe Charger].

Note: Give the device enough time to charge up.
