M1 pro, 16, Ventura security update led to black screen in all boot modes

Hi, after a simple security update for MacOS Ventura, my 16' MacBook Pro - M1pro, booted up to a black screen.

I can shut it down only by holding the power button, I can turn it on via power button or any key, but after showing the Apple logo for 2 seconds, then it goes completeley black and unresponsive.

-Nothing changes even when trying to boot in recovery mode: audio chime, Apple logo with small text (Continue holding... , Loading startup options...) - straight to black screen.

What else can I try? Why is this happening?

Thank you!

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 13.5

None of those scenarios match my description. I've tried everything.
My MacBook powers on to a black screen even after announcing it's going to the startup options.

To get into DFU mode every time.

  1. Make sure the USB-C cable you are using to connect your MacBook to the Mac running OS12.4 or greater and Configurator is one that Configurator can see. My powerbrick to MacBook cable didn't work and neither did a Thunderbolt3 cable. A regular USB-C cable is working though. It needs to be plugged into the USB-C port of the MacBook closest to where the magsafe connector would be plugged in.
  2. Make sure the power to the MacBook is coming in via USB-C in the left USB-C port next to where the Configurator cable is plugged in. (The Genius suggested this and not to use MagSafe. I have used both and see no difference between the two..)
  3. Press the power button quickly till you see an icon of your MacBook show up in the Configurator screen with the label underneath it saying "MacBook Pro" and then release.
  4. Press, in this order, the power button first and then Left-Control, Left-Option, Right-Shift simultaneously so all four buttons are pressed and then wait for the graphic of your MacBook to disappear and the "Connect Devices" screen to show. Release the three keys other than the power button and the screen should change to a dashed square with "DFU" written in it.
  5. Release the power button. You are now in DFU mode and can drag-drop ipsw files to the icon or right-click it to access the menu and try "revive" - which isn't working for me. "Restore" will also be accessed from here when I have run out of options... Anyone else have a fix that has worked?

Same problem here with my M1 MacBook Pro after a security update. The staff at the Genius bar says lots of customers have been coming in with same problem the last few days and might be related to having 3rd-party security software on their system. I have Falcon Crowdstrike on mine. During startup the Apple logo shows up very faintly on the black screen if you shine a strong flashlight at it. So far no luck with Configurator. Got to the 4/4 screen but then error message and now can't get back into DFU mode any more. Guy at Genius Bar in Kawasaki trying to fix it now.

I tried downloading the ipsw files from

https://mrmacintosh.com/apple-silicon-m1-full-macos-restore-ipsw-firmware-files-database/

to roll back the firmware by drag-dropping the ipsw file into the Configurator DFU icon but Revive doesn't work with 13.6, 13.5.2 or 13.5.1 and gives the following message:

The System cannot be restored on this device. Failed to restore device in recovery mode, libusbrestore error:21 [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore - 0x15 (21)]

I guess an M1 MacBook Pro is a mobile device but the error reads more like it thought I was trying to fix an iPad...

Not quite ready yet to try a Restore rather than Revive because it says it wipes all your files..

Encountered the same issue on my M1 Pro MBP. I got it fixed though. If you have a second Mac, this is what you can do:

1.) Revive bridgeOS in DFU mode (by running configurator app in another mac)

2.) Now after reviving the mac, you will be presented with option to reinstall Sonoma OS (I never installed Sonoma in the first place)

3.) Go with option to reinstall Sonoma OS and it will fix the problem

On retrospection, felt helpless when I couln’t login to the system and SSD is not accessible. If the device got bricked and no way to restore, unless you have the data backed up its gone.Rethinking was it worth getting a Mac in the first place.
