I went to Walmart and purchased a $500. Apple gift card today. I sent it by my iPhone to my friend on messenger. He went to use it and there was no balance on the card, it was zero. Now what do I do?

What about the $500. ? Am I out the money? Is there a way to trace it? If a card doesn’t have a balance on it, would it not have activated by the register at the store but printed a receipt that it was.
I have the receipt and a copy of the card. Do you need to see them?
