My new Apple Watch ultra doesn’t ring or answer calls.

My husbands Apple Watch ultra doesn’t ring when someone calls if his cell phone is off. He has cellular on the watch. Also if his phone is on and his watch rings, he answers the call and can’t hear the voice on the other end even though they can hear him.

This is ridiculous. Please fix this bug. I bought a watchphone with 4G connectivity, it should be able to use the 4G connectivity. All these arbitrary restrictions and bugs Apple purposefully includes in their product makes it very frustrating for the user.

Hi there lxilio2,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities.

While capable of performing a variety of functions connected to cellular data, in order for the Apple Watch Ultra to make and receive calls without its paired iPhone, it must be connected to a Wi-Fi network, per the information in Use Apple Watch Ultra without its paired iPhone - Apple Support. If your husband's watch is not connected to Wi-Fi when the iPhone is off, it is expected behavior that it will not receive calls, even if connected to cellular data.

When he does make or receive calls on the watch, both parties should be able to hear without issue. If he has not already, we suggest troubleshooting this by first restarting the watch, then making sure it has the latest watchOS software installed:

  1. Restart Apple Watch - Apple Support
  2. Update your Apple Watch - Apple Support

These will isolate the issue a bit for us, and may resolve it completely.

Don't hesitate to respond back if you still need some help.

Best!

I am using Apple Watch Ultra 2. Had the same problem after using the watch for 2 months. This got resolved today. The phone network engineer asked me to take the following steps:

1) Unpair my Apple Watch

2) Remove mobile service

3) Reset the watch (complete reset)

4) Pair the phone. Set up as a new watch.

5) Activate mobile service

I waited for 30 minutes and switched off my mobile and called my number from another handset. And voila! It worked! Hope this helps.

I’ve been having this exact same issue for well over a year now, AT&T makes it work when I call them and it generally fixes the watch for about a week and then it stops ringing again.

I miss so many calls because of this and I’m so tired of calling AT&T to have them make it work again temporarily.

I’m not sure what they’re doing behind-the-scenes but I wish they would make it a permanent fix.

I missed many calls like everyone else. I was not getting calls on any Apple device. I called Apple support and could not fix.

Finally fixed it myself today. WOW is all I can say. It was my Apple Watch causing the issue.

1- Open Apple Watch app on your iPhone

2- Go to Gestures

3- Turn off/disable “Cover to mute”

Done all fixed.

As soon as I disabled “cover to mute” my iPhone, iPad, iMac and Apple Watch started to ring again

As soon as I enable “cover to mute” all Apple devices would NOT ring

So disable “cover to mute” on your Apple Watch and if you need to mute an incoming call just press the crown on the watch

Hope this helps
