Homepod loses ability to restart on tap after update to OS 17

We have found it very convenient to "tap" on a HomePod to start or stop it. If we stop it while on a radio stations live feed, it would re-start the same feed, just like turning on a traditional radio. Since updating to OS 17, tapping the HomePod no longer restarts the paused feed, and the HomePod finds some random music from my library, instead.

If I look at the HomePod in the Home app, the paused feed is still present, and can be restarted from the app, but tapping the device no longer works, so the problem is not fatal but it is certainly inconvenient.

I am hoping there is some setting that needs to be changed.

This problem affects all of my HomePods. Three minis of different vintages, and Two series 2's.

Hey there tresinnoctem,

We understand you're unable to resume playing a radio station on your HomePod speakers. We'd be happy to provide information to help you address this.

Try resetting one of your HomePod speakers using the steps here:

Reset HomePod or HomePod mini - Apple Support

Set it up again as normal using the steps here: Set up HomePod or HomePod mini - Apple Support

Test to see if the issue persists. If it's resolved, test to see if the issue still continues on the other HomePods.

Kind regards.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, neither restarting, resetting nor restoring the HomePods to the "factory settings" and starting over fixes this problem.

I can pause a live radio feed by tapping the top screen.

I can restart the feed if I tap the screen again within a short period of time (probably just a few minutes)

I can restart the feed if I use the Home app and touch the "Play" icon, at any time.

But if I tap the top screen after more than a few minutes, Siri says "Sure. Here is some music just for you" before playing something related to my Apple Music Library, which is nice, but not the result that I wanted and was previously able to get.

For a number of reasons, the ability to tap a HomePod to resume the prior radio station feed was extremely helpful to me, and I am sorry that it has gone away.

Sorry to hear that you are still suffering from this issue. My HomePods are all still behaving as expected (i.e. stopping and starting on "tap") after the 17.1.1 update.

As noted earlier in this thread, however, I had performed full resets on all of them under 17.0, so maybe that makes a difference. If it doesn't work for you, you could try calling on Apple Support, just so they know the issue is still causing a problem for some users.
