Play music stored on my watch in watch os 10

I used to be able to control a playlist directly on the music app on my watch and NOT have it affect the music on my phone. With the recent update to the OS, it seems that I am using the watch as a remote control to the music app on my phone. I don't want this. I have one playlist transferred to my watch that I listen to while running/working out. When I play music from this playlist it also appears on my phone. And when I'm done with my workout and go back to music on my phone, it shows what I was listening to on my watch. I used to be able to listen to and control music stored on my watch, using my watch. And listen to and control music stored on my phone using my phone.

How do I get back to that?

The suggestion from rafabraga was helpful. And the latest update was hopeful. But…still no joy. Yesterday, it worked great. I was able to start up the music app, select the playlist on my watch, and play while I ran. However today, I could not select the playlist on the watch. When I selected the watch as the source, it started playing music that I don’t have downloaded to the watch. And I could not figure out how to select my playlist. I have no idea where the music was coming from!

IMHO, Apple have F’d this up royally and need to fix it urgently. For Pete’s sake, on the Watch, choosing to play music STORED LOCALLY ON THE WATCH should be dead simple; there should be an obvious, easy control. But no….

Last month, December 2023, I called Apple Support because on my Watch, when I tried to play music STORED ON MY WATCH when no Internet connection was present, I got a message saying (paraphrasing) “You need a cellular or wireless Internet connection to play music.” When I clicked “OK” to dismiss the message, it just kept appearing, giving me no way to get back to into the Music or Now Playing apps. But of course, while on the phone with Apple Support, the second time I clicked “OK,” the message magically disappeared and the Watch did let me play locally-stored music. So the vibe I got from the Support rep was like I was an idiot, nothing wrong, go away.

*With* the Watch connected to the Internet, it’s still some kind of puzzle to try to figure out how to force the Watch to play locally-stored music. (not helped at all by the enduring confusion between the Music and Now Playing apps). ‘Glad to see I’m not the only one frustrated by this.
