Macbook Pro M2 keeps disconnecting and reconnecting from/to USB-C Display (Dell 2723) Suddenly

Hello,

As of this morning my Macbook Pro m2 has developed an issue. I have been using it with the Dell 2723 Monitor via a USB-C connection without incident for months. Yesterday I removed my laptop from the office to use solo elsewhere in the house, as I do often. As of this morning when plugging back into the USB-C cable that had previously powered the laptop and carried the signal to the dell display, randomly the connection will just be dropped, all the windows and applications moved to the laptop screen, external power lost. Then suddenly it will just re-establish the connection for a minute or two, and repeat.

This is obviously unacceptable behaviour for a brand new computer that was working correctly and had experienced no software changes whatsoever.

What is the fix for this issue? I must run my setup via USB-C because the monitor is acting not only as a USB hub but as my wired connection to the internet as well.

Please advise.

Thank you,

Kyle

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately for me this wasn't the solution.

I was using a correctly rated usb-c cable, and tried a couple of others in various lengths. Here is an update.

Trying new cables didn't work. What DID work (I'll come back to this) was using the laptops native power supply constantly which 'fixed' the problem. However it only fixed the problem until the next time I unplugged it to go mobile, and now once again I am getting the same connecting and disconnecting issue, even while plugged into the main system power to a wall outlet.

There may still be some unresolved complexities built into the Apple-silicon Mac's Thunderbolt ports, which are generated deep inside the System-On-a-Chip, not by an off-the-shelf intel ThunderBolt chip. This is especially likely when power delivery over USB-C is also involved.

The complaints about this here or the forums are only occasional, and often very vague. What exactly is the fundamental issue has not yet solidified.

Do not be satisfied just raising the issue here. I encourage you to press Apple Support to file a Bug Report on your behalf. When they do this, they also collects a standard set of circumstances, so Engineering can begin to see if any patterns are emerging.
