what happens to my apple care if I uprgade to a new phone before the 2 years is up?

So I have a 14 Pro Max with apple care plus. I thought about upgrading to the 15 pro max. What happens to my last year of apple care? would that just be like throwing it away?

Hello agraced1982,

You’d need to cancel your current AppleCare contract and buy a new one for the new iPhone as you cannot transfer it to a new device. The AppleCare contract is tied to a device, not an owner.

If you cancel your AppleCare plan more than 30 days after your purchase, you’ll get a refund based on the percentage of unexpired AppleCare plan coverage, minus the value of any service already provided.

Transferring AppleCare to a New Device:. AppleCare cannot be transferred to a new-purchased device. However, if it was a replacement, then it would be transferred automatically. Go here: Transfer your AppleCare plan - Apple Support

Thank you. Sounds like I should ride out my apple care since I paid for it and upgrade on the next round of new releases.

Thank you again.

You are welcome.

For Compatibly Concerns, I Plan to Keep Mine:

I have my 2018 MBP, and plan to keep it for a long time to come. Apple sometimes lets its customers proceed with renewing their AppleCare on an annual basis. The reason I keep it is because it is an Intel-based Mac. Newer Mac models (Silicon-based Macs), still aren’t compatible with Intel-processor-required software.
