Crashing / Restarting - errors attached

Hello,

I've been having issues with my Macbook Pro, where it would crash and / or restart at random.

I previously had Bootcamp installed, which I removed using the Bootcamp wizard but was not able to reallocate the disk space. This problem has been persisting since this time. I've used Disk Utility instead Recover Mode, used First Aid on all containers and was able to reallocate the space. However, the crashing still persists.

When I log into the computer, its a 50/50 that it will restart or crash. When running CleanMyMac the computer crashes within seconds. It seems like the crashing is either app specific or ram specific, I am not sure. Hoping you can help! I included both problem reports from both crash incidents.

One crash was "WindowServer Quit unexpectedly" and the other was "Your computer was restarted because of a problem". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Those are both references to memory not owned by the current process. The first one appears to be a reference to location 0, which is not owned by any process. This suggest you have added third-party software that is 'protecting you' by causing a kernel panic.

By far the easiest way to cause poor performance, instability, overheating and crashing is to install ANY third-party speeder-uppers, Cleaners, Optimizers, or Virus scanners. or a VPN that you installed yourself.

The idea that a third party, with no special knowledge of the inner workings of MacOS, can somehow find a simple way to protect your computer — that is not already being done by MacOS itself — suggests that the MacOS developers are somehow "holding out on you". That is absurd.

You should remove any and all (other than Apple built-in) virus scanners, speeder uppers, optimizers, cleaners, App deleters or VPN packages you installed yourself, or anything of that ilk.

Third-party file Sync-ers such as DropBox, BackBlaze, OneDrive, or GoogleDrive can ruin performance, but are not inherently dangerous.

I'm not sure how a User Account named Disk Password would have appeared either. It may be something required by Windows, and thereby related to Boot Camp. If you don't want to resort to the nuclear option of simply erasing the Mac (which always remains an option) perhaps you should determine if the Root User is enabled: How to enable the root user or change the root password on Mac - Apple Support. It is disabled by default but I have seen ill-conceived things not limited to "CleanMyMac" enable it for reasons known only to them.

As for VPNs, the only real need for one is to enable remote access to what would otherwise be a "closed" network; in other words one not connected to the Internet. Obviously that means you are willing to place your trust in that network, and its administrators trust granting you access to it. Commercial VPNs are often used to bypass government-imposed restrictions (for example), and they hide the IP address to and from which your Internet requests are sent and received — which is essentially meaningless anyway. Everything is encrypted these days anyway. The point is they provide nothing in the way of "security" and arguably make things easier for some nefarious actors or even legitimate law enforcement agencies to find out what you're doing.

Thanks Grant and John for both of your replies.

The software's that I have installed that I perceive may be the culprit would be Parallels (Virtual Machine for Windows), ExpressVPN (installed less than a month ago), and CleanMyMac by MacPaw (installed yesterday in an attempt to scan for any issues). Though I can say that CleanMyMac may be a current issue, it's not the source issue.

I travel frequently for work, would you suggest that Apple has a built-in VPN to secure my data that I can use instead? I would prefer to remain completely within the MacOS app space if there are apps that can assist.

Other than the recent CleanMyMac there hasn't been any cleaners or virus scanners installed. I am starting to think its Parallels or a combination of both Parallels and ExpressVPN - what are your thoughts? Could it be something else?

I've had OneDrive installed for years, no issue, performance yes, but crashing no. I'd love to be able to part ways with it, but cloud storage is highly required.

Do you have any recommendations for cleaning / virus scanning apps, optimizers, and VPNs that are within the MacOS / Apple Developer framework that I can use that won't cause crashing issues? Additionally, what would you suggest is the starting point to delete / uninstall to get this issue resolved?

Thanks for your assistance!

I am not aware of any crashing problems related to Parallels or Microsoft OneDrive, although they are certainly capable of it.

The first thing I do with any Mac that has ever been affected by any product resembling "CleanMyMac" is to erase it. It saves time and it saves my clients money. Those things are destructive in nature. It's what they do.

What function or benefit are you expecting a VPN to convey? Your question implies that it can be used to secure your data, and they don't do that. They don't do a lot of things people think they do, and what they can do ought to cause them concern. If you cannot explain a valid reason for using a VPN, don't.

Thanks John! I removed CleanMyMac and ExpressVPN - I had also removed Parallels as I wasn't using it any further. The function behind VPN was meant to secure my connection so that my data won't be breached as I work with sensitive client information. But if that isn't the case then perhaps it's not necessary.

Even after removing CleanMyMac there was a crash. I have 3 user accounts on my MacBook, when getting to the login screen there is a fourth account titled Disk Password which I am unsure how that got there. However, when I log into this account, it loads and disappears, then I'm back to 3 user accounts. I've logged in, and so far it doesn't seem to crash.

Do you think this has something to do with it?

I am experiencing this same issue on a system after updating from Ventura to Sonoma. Updated on another system and had the same issue then reset and installed Ventura with no issues afterwards.

You likely don't have the same macOS, the same hardware, the same aftermarket add-ons, or the same panic reports. When you Camp on here you will NOT get the attention your issues deserve.
