Apple Music Family account not linking to the Amazon Alexa app

I've got an Apple Family Music account. My account is fine but I can't get my children's accounts to link to their Amazon accounts. Both children have their own Amazon accounts and their own Echo device. Both children can play Apple Music through the Apple Music app on their phones (one has an iPhone, one has Android). For both children the Alexa app is linked to their Echo device.

I've tried a support call with Amazon which didn't resolve the issue (honestly the worst support experience/gaslighting experience or help in any way).

I've tried:

  1. Updating iOS & Android
  2. Updating to the latest Alexa app (on both phones).
  3. Linking the skill using a web browser instead of the app
  4. Uninstalling and re-installing the Alexa app
  5. Disabling and re-enabling the Apple Music skill

Nothing seems to have any effect and I always end up with the 'Linking Unsuccessful' message.

What can I try?

The solution didn't seem to be documented anywhere so here goes...

There's an age limit on the Apple music accounts which can be linked to an Alexa account.

I think the limit was 13 years of age. The only way round it is to have older children.

If you have incorrectly created your children's Apple accounts with dates which show they're younger than 13, it isn't possible to change the date of birth. A new account can be created with their correct date of birth showing they're 13 years or older.

If you're keen to stick with the same email address/account name for your child, their existing Apple account can be deleted and a new account can be created with the same details but a corrected date of birth. After deleting the account, it takes several days for Apple to complete the deletion process before another account can be created. This will lose history, emails, subscriptions etc.

This article says the same account name can't be re-used: How to delete your Apple ID account – Apple Support (UK). That wasn't my experience and I was able to re-create with the same account name. I suspect that was because I was using a third-party email address, (outlook.com) not an icloud.com address but be aware that if you delete your child's account you may not be able to re-create an account with the same name.

Hope this is of use to anyone pulling their hair out like I was.
