My 2017 10.5” iPad Pro, Refurbished by Apple and purchased through Apple’s website has a Long Island zip code that fills in on my Texas address and can I get rid of it?

I purchased a 2017 iPad Pro from Apple that was a Certified Refurbished model and identical to mine. My original iPad Pro 10.5” model was not put together properly from Apple. The screen basically fell out of the frame as it was missing the clips that are suppose to have something to do with keeping the screen from falling out and breaking the teeth on the home button connections and ripping out the plug ins that these fit. It was just double sided tape and it was purchased from Apple and never had any repair work done to the device. I guess it was just missed when it was made. I’m aware that it’s almost an outdated product. However, it was suppose to be completely wiped from the previous owner’s information. I have a Long Island, NY address that pops up in the grey area where suggested words do every time I add my Texas address to anything I order. Is there somewhere in the settings where I can change this to my zip code? I purchased new 2022 iPad Pro 11 inch models that are still in the boxes and I don’t want to transfer this to the newer iPad Pros. My device is the only one that was replaced and I think it’s a later version then my husband’s as it has different looking graphics and other features, but it is still a thorn in my side. I also don’t want to drive 50 miles to the closest Apple Store either because gas is expensive and it’s just too hot here to go anywhere. If iOS 17 is coming out soon and the 2017 iPad Pro supports the operating system, then I will probably upgrade my iCloud storage to support both devices. Basically clone the newer iPad Pro so I can continue using both devices until the 2017 iPad Pro no longer gets updates. This is exactly why I don’t trade in my old Apple products. We have a drawer with several different iPhones, iPads, and the Apple Music players that look like the iPhone but without the phone feature. I’m not sure what else of the previous owners information is on the tablet! I have been dealing with this for over 4yrs now, mostly because of the pandemic and my husband’s melanoma diagnosis last year. I purchased the 2017 model directly from Apple and really cheap. I have purchased ever Apple device we’ve ever owned directly from Apple’s Website. It was like brand new when I got it, and still is, but I immediately noticed the Long Island zip code kept popping up and when I use the automatic address function. It plugs in my address, but with the Long Island zip code. If these older iPad Pro models don’t get iOS 17 support, it will still be a problem with the newer version of the iPad Pro as it would only make sense to transfer the data to the new iPad Pro models. I had to basically start from scratch with this iPad as my iCloud account was not available for a backup. I think Apple had cleared out iCloud to prevent people from downloading older versions of iOS.

What is even more concerning is if the original owner who apparently upgraded to a newer iPad Pro has any kind of access to my device and the personal data that I have amassed on this refurbished device. I honestly expected more from Apple on completely clearing out all of the previous owners information.

If I order anything from websites that allows me to add my address and other information, it will automatically use a Long Island NY zip code. I bought this from Apple as refurbished and it was like brand new. It shows up in the same area as the suggested words and I have set up the wallet account as well as registered the iPad to my account. I picked up my original iPad Pro 2017 model and the screen just fell out of the frame. It looked like it was glued in with two sided tape and was missing the brackets that the exploded view shows. The refurbished one has never been repaired and I purchased it directly from Apple”s website. My original one was really screwed up as It broke several of the prongs off the home button ribbons and tore out several imbedded connectors as well. I took it to the Austin Apple Store and they couldn’t get the information from the device and for some reason it wasn’t backed up either. I think Apple had deleted backups to prevent going back to an earlier version of iOS. I purchased the refurbished one I’m currently using from the Apple Website . We have two newer models that we have not activated yet, and I would like to get rid of the Long Island Zip Code before I transfer the information from this tablet to the newer one. Not sure if I can get rid off it or if I need to take it to an Apple Store and see if they can get it off as the primary zip code. Basically if I order anything from a new website and I try and auto fill my address, it will list my Texas street address, town, but it will use the Long Island Zip code. I’m assuming that someone who lived in NY probably traded up to a newer model but Apple didn’t completely wipe the storage or something that keeps this information. Also my Apple News has New York as the primary news source, which I’m assuming has to do with the Long Island Zip Code issue. I have my address properly set in the settings and it is set up properly in my Apple ID account. I’m sorry for the long post. ADD is no joke. I can try and send a screenshot of something showing the zip code in the grey area above the keyboard if that helps.

Appreciate any assistance you can give me as well as your time spent on this issue in advance,

I decided to take a screenshot of my partial order from a we site to show you what I mean the iPad Pro tries to continue to show me a zip code and I don’t know how to get it changed to my own zip code. I looked the zip code up when I got this refurbished by Apple and it says it’s a Long Island NY zip code . Also in Apple News it shows me a large section of New York related news in a Light Blue section. I checked the settings and it has my zip code as does my wallet and my Apple ID account. I guess before I transfer any information to a 2022 iPad Pro, I might have to drive to Austin have Apple look at the issue. I apologize for not getting back sooner, but my husband has been diagnosed with melanoma and has been taking Keytruda infusions every three weeks and he had one yesterday. The heat here is really terrible and it wipes me out and him as well. But I really appreciate your time and any help you might offer to resolve this annoying issue. Much appreciated,

I added text to this screenshot but it seems to be missing. I don’t know exactly what happened to it, but I’ll briefly resend the message. Here you can see that a 87559 zip code is being shown to use on a recent purchase. I have looked it up and it is a Long Island NY zip code. I have checked the settings, the wallet settings, and my Apple ID settings and they all have my correct zip code. As I mentioned, I purchased this directly from Apple through their website and it has been there since I purchased this a couple of years ago. Apple News also has a light blue designated area with NY local news that is similar to what I have added for our local news which is San Antonio for some reason. I don’t know why Austin is not listed on the local news for Texas. But I think it is somehow related to the zip code issue as well. In the photo, you can see that it’s suggesting the NY zip code for the blank area on a recent order. If I hit the auto fill button it automatically fills in everything correctly, except it puts this zip code in instead of out actual zip code. I have have checked out everything in the settings that I think might be the culprit and I keep finding my zip code is correct. When I type the word zip code, it often comes up with “home” and 87559 underneath the word “home”. It’s annoying more than anything but I have often wondered if there’s other things from the previous owner that was not completely wiped from the iPad that is related to the previous owner. I’m assume this was a trade in for a newer model pr a cellular model. It’s in immaculate condition, but we have 2022 iPad Pro models that I haven’t had time to transfer the information over from the 2017 models yet as my husband was diagnosed with melanoma last year and he has been taking Keytruda infusions and for five straight weeks, we have had to drive to Austin to get daily targeted radiation treatments and between the heat and the early morning treatments during the week. I’m actually more tired than he is from driving and the heat here has been historically hotter than most people that have lived here for their whole lives can remember. I would like to get this resolved before iOS comes out and we might not get it on the 2017 10.5 iPad Pro models we’re still using. I might need to drive to Austin and have Apple look at the issue and see if they can fix the problem. I’m extremely thankful for your help with this and your time. We live in such a difficult world right now that people have not been as willing to help others with problems and I appreciate your efforts,

Well that’s really concerning because I know for sure that I purchased the refurbished iPad from the Apple website and it was in a blank white box with the original wrapping like the new models come with and it has a legitimate Apple address on the outer box and the paperwork. I have even talked with Apple support about other issues and they have identified it as a refurbished unit through Apple. Maybe it was refurbished in some other country. I’m not exactly sure. But I am sure that it was purchased from Apple and not a site that was posing as Apple. They knew what my old iPad numbers were and my iPhone I had at the time.

You are absolutely correct, I looked it up and it says the following:

The ZIP Code 87559 belongs to el Ejido Río Rico in Matamoros, state of Tamaulipas.

I was absolutely sure I had looked it up through the USPS site and it said it was a Long Island NY zip code. Now I’m really concerned as Apple support should be able to have known this when I initially set it up and I took both this tablet and my old one into the Apple Store to see if they could get any information from my defective iPod Pro. Now I’m wondering if someone has the ability to see my iPad and my personal data as we have had some suspicious activity on my refurbished iPad with unauthorized purchases.

I looked it up and you are correct. I could have sworn I looked it up when it started showing up in the bar and I also thought I determined it was a Long Island NY zip code. I posted below what I found and now I’m really concerned about how safe using this device has been. I took both this tablet and the old one that the screen just fell out of to the Apple Store in Austin and they should have been able to see it was a Mexican refurbished tablet. I’m hoping that Apple has contracts with Mexico for refurbishing the item. We’re in Texas and we use to travel to Mexico quite frequently, so it might be someone who bought it in Mexico and lives in Texas. At least I hope that is the case.

I’m going to stop using the device and go to the Apple Store in Austin and have them look at the device. I buy all of my Apple devices directly from the Apple Store App. So I hope that it’s something that was owned by a customer who may have purchased the device in Mexico and moved to Texas. That’s pretty common for Texas as we border Mexico. I would think if the device was counterfeit, then Apple would not have set it up on my account to begin with. The few suspicious transactions were around the same time we had company and a few of my husbands nephews were playing with our devices and they made some in app purchases. But, I have the shipping box it came in here in our office closet as I keep everything from electronic devices we purchase. I guess I should contact support and make sure it’s not a counterfeit device, but one that was owned by someone who lived or lives in Mexico and came up into Texas and traded it in, or mailed it back to Apple.

Thank you for your help and I’m grateful for your support. I’m going to call Apple Support tomorrow and discuss this issue further with them. I am thinking that it could have been someone who lives in Mexico and sent it in for a trade in or something similar. We have an idea about the charges as we had my husband’s nephew’s here for a couple of weeks and that’s when we got a bunch of in-app purchases on my iPad. So we think it was one of them who made the charges to the family share account.
