My husband died, his appleID was used for media purchases for our shared family account for the last 15years. So am I understanding correctly that all media purchased with his appleID will just disappear?!

Everything that was already downloaded to a computer should remain available to you. DRM protected content should download and play on devices that are still signed into the Apple ID on an authorized computer. See How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple account - Apple Support.
