Can't update MacOS

I'm on a MacBook Pro retina late 2012, running os x 10.8.5.

I am fairly sure I need to update the OS, but I won't let me as whenever I try to it won't let me connect to the appstore.

Edit: The reason I say I think I need to update OS is because many basic functions aren't working and I believe that's why.

10.8.5 predates the change in internet security that occurred in 2015 when Internet encryption shifted to Transport Layer Security (TLS) from older Secure Socket Layer (SSL).

if you can't get Software Update to provide a more recent version of macOS, you will need to use this article to attempt to download a later version. The links toward then end, when used with Safari Browser should be able to provide a .dmg file for !0.11 El Capitan. If that does not provide a .dmg file, please post back for a direct link.

The dmg file will produce a pkg, and the package will place the installer in your Applications folder, and only then can you install by double-clicking the Installer.
