Edit Page Templates is greyed out in Pages

Have attempted to edit both Apple Templates and ones I have created.

Under Toolbar View/Edit Page Templates, options grey.

Under Format, Edit Page Templates is missing.

Please advise how to activate edit option.

Regards,

Hey Viking, ta for your response.

I have created my own templates; have edited apple stock, imported 3rd party and built my own. All are saved under my templates. None are available to edit as templates under View panel.

'Unlock' is also greyed out regardless of value selected in document created from saved 'my' templates.

Appreciate your help when you've time mate. I can continue to create documents from existing templates, save as new templates and then delete former representation of said new template, but it would be a might easier if I could just open specific template and edit it's format as required.

I'm having the same problem, you have to make a new template to edit a template. No way of applying templates to documents already open. 'Edit templates' option in the menu bar greyed out for no apparent reason.

It makes you worry what on earth is going on with the Pages team at Apple. It seems bizarrely clunky, unhelpful, and tricky to use now.

You cannot edit the templates that shipped with Pages.

You can create a new document using your choice of template whether supplied by Pages, or your own (My Templates), and change the content in that new document. You may need to click on those items whose selectors are 'x' and then from the Arrange panel, choose Unlock. When finished, then you choose File menu : Save as Template… and place it in your My Templates collection.

Two things to look out for:

  1. You have to be using the Page Layout mode
    1. if File > Convert to Page Layout is visible then click on that.
    2. If File > Convert to Word Processing is visible then you're already using Page Layout mode.
  2. Edit Page Templates is not available if you're collaborating on a document.
    1. Move the document to your desktop, then you can edit the page templates.
    2. This restriction helps prevent conflicts that might arise from changes to fundamental layout elements that affect multiple pages. And it would be very nice if Apple actually made this clear instead of simply greying these elements out.
