There isnt enough characters for me to type in my recovery key

My password seems to not work no matter how carefully i type it in so I loaded up the recovery os. i tried logging in with my apple id and theres the same problem, ive even changed my apple id password and tried again but still didnt work. then from my phone, i generated a recovery key to use instead but every time i try to type it in the last 4 characters are cut off and there is no space to type them. any advice?
